About Giclée Prints
About Giclée Printing
Original fine art prints from Gallery W bear the embossed “W” brand as a mark of quality. The mark ensures that the print has been printed and inspected by the Gallery W print specialists.

What distinguishes a giclée print from other types of inkjet prints is primarily the quality standards used for inks, color management, image resolution, and the media (such as fine art papers or canvas.) The image resolution is far higher than traditional lithography, up to 2800 dpi (or dots per inch) versus 300 dpi.

Late in the 1980's, Iris printers were essentially an early large-format inkjet printer. Originally designed as pre-press proofing machines, Iris printers became popular with artists and fine art photographers for reproducing their work.

To distinguish the fine art prints from the pre-press proofs, this new medium needed a name. Jack Duganne of Nash Productions who was a pioneer of early inkjet printing coined the term “giclée”. He chose the French word, "giclée," (pronounced gee-clay) which literally means, "that which is sprayed." Today the term has become synonymous with fine art inkjet printing.

Gallery W fine art prints are produced using a 7-color Epson StylusPro 9600 large format professional printer using “Ultrachrome” inks for greater vibrancy and longevity (rated to last 70-100 years depending on paper.) Each image is carefully prepared to ensure that the finished work reflects the true intention of the original art, with vibrant, accurate colors, and fine detail. We use ImagePrint color management software and calibrated monitors to ensure accurate color reproduction.

Papers

Although we use a variety of papers, our preference is Hahnemühle Photo Rag for ultimate quality. This is a heavyweight (308gsm) acid-free, fine art archival paper that presents a beautiful museum quality print. We use matte black Ultrachrome ink on this fine art paper for deeper contrast in both our color, and black and white prints.

This paper is so heavy it need not be mounted. We suggest simply adding a matte and framing under UV glass or Plexiglas.

As an option, we also print on specially prepared canvas for a final print that looks warm and inviting in any environment. Canvas prints are delivered stretched and ready-to-frame.

Our Black and White prints exhibit extremely fine tonality, with deep blacks and smooth tonal gradations and we believe they exceed the quality traditional photographic prints.

Certificate of Authenticity

Accompanying each print is a certificate of authenticity, with the number of the print, name of the print and date produced. The certificate is signed by the artist/photographer and bears the seal of Gallery W.

This Gallery W mark ensures that that each print has been inspected for quality, and confirms that the print was made using the highest standards in color management software, printing technology and fine art archival papers or canvas.

Caring for Your Prints

All photographs and art prints will fade to some degree over time. Our papers and inks are rated at 70-100 years depending on paper selection. You can maximize the lifespan of your prints by following our care instructions, also included with your print. We recommend displaying your prints under UV protecting glass or Plexiglas, away from direct sunlight.
